Coal gas is a low calorific value gas. It is obtained by the action of steam and hot anthracite or coke. The main components are hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and also contain a small amount of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane and other components; the content of each component depends on the raw materials used and gasification conditions. It is mainly used as raw material for synthetic ammonia, synthetic liquid fuel, etc., or as a supplementary source of industrial fuel gas.

What is obtained from coal gasification is water gas, semi-water gas, and air gas (or producer gas). These gases have low calorific value, so they are collectively called low calorific value gas;
The gas obtained by coking in the coal carbonization method is called coke oven gas, which belongs to medium calorific value gas and can be used as civil fuel in cities.
Carbon monoxide and hydrogen in coal gas are important chemical raw materials and can be used to synthesize ammonia, methanol, etc. For this reason, the coal gas used as chemical raw material is called syngas, which can also be produced from natural gas, light oil and heavy oil.
